“Makeup may not change the world or even your life, but it can be a first step in learning things about yourself you may have never discovered otherwise.”
Kevyn Aucoin has been heralded as one of the most pioneering makeup artists of the 21st century. His philosophy was that all women were beautiful inside, and that makeup was merely a way to reveal and enhance that inner beauty. Kevyn Aucoin started off by doing models’ makeup for free in New York but was quickly spotted by Vogue. He then worked his way up the fickle makeup ladder, always sticking to his inner-beauty philosophy, and became the Creative Director of the Ultima II line by Revlon, at the tender age of 21.
Kevyn Aucoin revolutionised makeup by launching the ‘Nakeds’ line, in 1984. This included yellow-based foundation (rather than pink), as well as neutral toned eye shadows, blushers and lipsticks, in varied shades of beige/brown. Until then, makeup had been obvious on a woman’s face, and either made her look very dramatic or like a clown. Kevyn Aucoin introduced the concept of no-makeup makeup. He wanted makeup to enhance rather than hide a woman’s face, in a natural way. Aucoin went from strength to strength as he became one of the most coveted celebrity artists ever, and was able to charge up to $10,000 for a session.Unfortunately, Kevyn Aucoin died young- he was only 40 years old. But his legacy lives on through the Kevyn Auction Beauty company, and through all the other makeup artists who have embraced his techniques and philosophy.

To create the “alluring” eyeshadow shape shown on Julia Roberts to the right, you’ll need the following tools and products:
concealer and face powder
powder and sponge
black eyeliner pencil
neutral beige powder eyeshadow
sponge tip applicator
eyeshadow brush
eyelash curler and black mascara
apricot blush and blush brush
neutral lip color and lip brush
If possible, you should remove contact lenses before working on the eye area and put them back in when you’re done. Make sure that you have enough light for makeup, keep the curtains open or light on.
Use concealer sparingly, followed by loose powder applied with a powder sponge (not velour). (Optional: leave a little powder under the eye, to catch falling shadow.)
Apply black eyeliner pencil to upper and lower inner eye area. Smudge pencil gently into the lashes.
Using either a sponge-type applicator or shadow brush (your choice), blend pencil into smoky circle around eye.
First, using the eyeshadow applicator, softly retrace penciled area (from lashes outward) with black eyeshadow. The idea is to smoke up the area. Remember to use as little as possible to get the best results.
Next, using the eyeshadow brush, arc into the crease of the eyelid, under and softly outward from the corner. (Concentrate the shadow on the outer half of the eye.)
Use beige powder eyeshadow to highlight browbone and eyelid. (You can even sweep a little bit slightly down the side of the nose and under the eye.)
Curl the lashes and apply black mascara.
Finally, fill in the mouth (using a lip brush) with neutral lip color (in Julia’s case, for this photo, no lip pencil outline was necessary), and dust the cheeks with apricot blush.
